Plot
The film is set in two parallel timelines: the present day and the pre-independence era. In the present day, Kanan (Suraj Sharma) returns to India from Canada to marry his childhood sweetheart Anu (Mehreen Pirzada). However, he is told by a priest that he is manglik (born under an unlucky star) and he has to marry a tree first to nullify the negative effects on his marriage. Kanan reluctantly agrees and marries a tree, which is chopped down after the ceremony. Unbeknownst to him, the tree was inhabited by the spirit of Shashi (Anushka Sharma), a young woman who died under mysterious circumstances 98 years ago.
Shashi's spirit follows Kanan to his house and tells him that he is now her husband, as he married the tree that had her 'mannat' (wish) tied to it. She also tells him that she cannot move on to the afterlife until she finds out the truth about her death. Kanan tries to get rid of Shashi, but she refuses to leave him alone. He also tries to hide her presence from Anu and his family, but they start noticing his strange behaviour.
In the pre-independence era, Shashi was a young and beautiful poetess who lived in Phillaur, Punjab. She wrote poetry under the pen name of Phillauri and became famous for her romantic verses. She fell in love with Roop Lal 'Phillauri' (Diljit Dosanjh), a singer who came to her village. Roop Lal was initially unaware of Shashi's identity, but later discovered that she was the Phillauri whose poetry he admired. They decided to get married, but faced opposition from Shashi's conservative brother Kishanchand (Manav Vij), who wanted her to marry a wealthy man.
On the day of their wedding, Roop Lal was arrested by the British for singing anti-colonial songs at a rally. He managed to escape from the prison with the help of his friend Soma (Abhishek Banerjee) and reached Shashi's house. However, he found out that Shashi had committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree, as she was unable to bear the separation from him. Roop Lal was heartbroken and tied his 'mannat' (wish) to the same tree, hoping to meet Shashi again in another life.
